It is always a good idea to learn a little bit about your potential contractor. After all, you will be working with him closely and will want someone you trust and feel confident can get the job done. We hope the following information will help you choose a contractor you will be happy to have working in your home.
INSURANCE Professional Contractors always carry liability insurance. This insurance protects you as the homeowner, in the event of accidental damage to your property. Ask to see proof of insurance.
PRICE VS VALUE Don't compare apples to oranges. Very often the lowest price is not the best deal. Most likely a drastic difference in price indicates a difference in service, grade of materials or quality of work. Be sure to compare the service, product and quality of what various contractors are offering. Know what you are getting for your money and go with the best value.
IMAGE & APPEARANCE Is the estimator or salesperson neat, clean and on time? Were your phone calls returned promptly? A true professional is conscious of his image and this usually reflects his ability to complete the job in a timely and organized manner.
Find out who will be doing the work. Will the people who you have spoken to and met with be doing the work? Or will a crew of unknown workers be coming to your home? Will the work be contracted out or will the company that gave you the estimate complete it?
COMMUNICATION Proper communication between you and your contractor will to a large extent determine your degree of satisfaction with the finished job. A contractor's ability to effectively communicate, return phone calls and carry out what is agreed upon often reflects his ability to deliver the end product that you are looking for. Choose a contractor that you are comfortable talking to and asking questions of. Without proper communication, you may not be satisfied with the end result.
REFERENCES Talking to a contractor's former or current clients can give you an idea of his track record, but beware of making this your biggest consideration. By all means, check references but bear in mind that anyone can give you a list of "satisfied customers" to contact, so be sure to consider other factors such as communication, image and overall value.
